Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is going to be out of action for longer than expected. Vermaelen had injured his left ankle and was thought to be back in action this month.
However Vermaelen has undergone surgery again and will. Arsene Wenger told TalkSport Radio: “He will be a fraction longer than expected. He will not be straight back after the international break. One or two weeks later and we still have to count one month for him.”
Jack Wilshere was also thought be back in action sooner than eventually turned out to be the case. He is now predicted to be back in February. At this stage I usually accept that whatever prognosis is given by the Arsenal medical staff will be off by a few weeks at least.
Hopefully Per Mertesacker and Koscielny can build a relationship in the next few weeks. The ideal centre-back pairing would probably be Mertesacker and Vermaelen but in reality the Belgian international will have to take things slowly and fight to regain his place in the side.
I’m pretty sure that if he hadn’t missed last season that he would be captain of Arsenal right now. In any case the Arsenal defence is slowly starting to look more solid (although there are still problems with set-pieces). A win against Tottenham with be a great boost for the team and restore some much needed belief amongst the team and the fans. Lets hope they can pull it off.
