Arsene Wenger has acted angrily to the suggestion that Van Persie could move to Manchester City in the next transfer window. Van Persie still has two years left on his contract but has made ambiguous statements about his future at Arsenal.
Manchester City are looking to sign a new striker because of the trouble they are having with Carlos Tevez. The Argentinian has been suspended after refusing to play in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.
Wenger was quoted in the Guardian about Van Persie, he said: “I never said I was unhappy with Man City but I don’t know why we speak about transfers. I will never answer any more. Robin is under contract until 2013. This is a story created to create a story. There is no truth in it. Why should we sell players in January? Man City already have problems because they have too many strikers, they pay half of the league for them to play away somewhere. Why should they want to buy strikers? It’s very difficult to understand.”
It’s incredible that City would want to sign another striker when they already have Balotelli, Dzeko and Aguero. And why would Van Persie want to sit on the bench for half the games while those other get to play games?
I think if Van Persie does leave Arsenal it will be for a big club in Italy or Spain, but that will be a while yet. For now Van Persie is staying at the Emirates.
