A COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO POTENTIAL PLAYMAKERS: STEVE DAVIS vs MARVIN MARTIN…..by Jason Godfrey
Most of you should realize that the internet tabloids (caughtoffside, international business times, mirror, guardian, telegraph, dailymail etc. etc. etc.) just like to make up a lot of wild nonsense rumors for their own ratings and publicity. They sometimes get information right, but that is only when the information its in the final stages of being true. We all know as Arsenal fans, that Wenger is undeniably secretive and cautious about all of his transfer dealings; and rightly so, the amount of clubs that just go after Wenger’s targets instead of doing their own research is more than a handful unfortunately. So I like to do my own research and try to find players that aren’t in the spotlight that are likely (not definitely) to be somewhere in Wenger’s line of sight. I can tell you right now, that Wenger is not looking to sign Sneijder, Malouda, Benayoun; or any other huge name player. These are good examples of media instigated rubbish, and should be ignored.
Anyway, onto the comparison of Steve Davis (Rangers) and Marvin Martin (Sochaux)
The 23 year old (Height – 1.71m Weight – 63 kg) Frenchman, Marvin Martin has been slightly hinted at by several sites as a target for Arsenal (as I previously stated, they do get some things right) Here are some statistics. In the last two seasons with Sochaux, Martin made a total of 73 appearances, 7 goals and 23 assists. Last season 24/64 shots were on target. The season before, 16/48 were on target. In both seasons combined Martin committed 95 fouls, while drawing 105 fouls. Martin is only just beginning to break into the French national team, and in the three games he has appeared for them (one he was a sub) he has netted twice and assisted one. He has had no Europa League experience except for this present season (2 games). During this present season with Sochaux, Martin has made 4 appearances netting 1 and assisting 1, with 4/8 shots on target. Here is a video of some of his skills. He has been dubbed the next Zidane. (without the head-butting of course)
The recently turned 26 year old (Height – 1.73m Weight – 69.92 kg) Irishman, Steve Davis has not been in the spotlight of the tabloids and is an in-the-background player that might catch Arsene Wenger’s eye. A player that could go unnoticed until signature time (hypothetically). Here are some statistics. In the last two seasons with Rangers, Davis made a total of 101 appearances, 10 goals and 22 assists. Last season 27/45 shots were on target. The season before, 20/38 were on target. In both seasons combined Davis committed 69 fouls, while drawing 49 fouls. Davis has been appearing for Northern Ireland’s national team since 2005, participating in WC qualifiers and EC qualifiers (as well as the actual tournaments), and is a key player in the squad. Rangers (and Martin) have been in the Europa League since last season and the beginning of this 2011/2012 season. During this present season with Rangers, Davis has made 5 appearances netting 1 and assisting 3, with 3/4 shots on target. Now unfortunately, the video of Davis’ skills is kind of long, and you have to look for him when he has the ball, but it’s the only video that does him justice. When viewing the video, you’ll notice that Davis is all around the midfield, not only making assists, but also helping out the defense and winning the ball back in order to execute more play-making passes. (his assist for the first goal is brilliant)
In conclusion, I believe that both of these players would be loyal Arsenal play-makers; unlocking the huge potential of goals we have waiting behind the flood gates. Personally, I would maybe prefer Steve Davis due to his experience in higher level football, but that is just a miniscule difference. As far as valuation goes, I would guess that Marvin Martin would maybe cost around £7 – £11 million while Steve Davis might cost £9 – £13 million. What do you guys think?
