According to media sources, Arsenal Football Club is apparently struggling to close a deal with a certain player who Lionel Messi himself once quoted as “one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against”. It is rumored that the player is holding out for a salary of about £100k a week.
Is this player worth £100k per week? I for one believe he is worth every penny and – in my opinion – is probably one of the most underrated player’s at the moment. So who’s this player? Theo Walcott. And I’m not at all surprised that so many AFC fans frown upon the salary he is reported to have asked for.
So, is Theo really worth that £100,000 p/w? Let’s see.
How does one determine a player’s footballing impact & equate that in monetary terms? To start with, we have to consult the real experts, not the player’s agent or the club’s CEO. The real experts to engage are fellow professional footballers & club managers. After all, these are the specialists who on a regular basis are tasked with dealing with devastating threats like Theo’s pace.
What players think,
In 2010 ESPNsoccernet reported that the then ‘FIFA World Player of the Year’ Lionel Messi was shocked at the exclusion of Theo Walcott from the England World Cup Squad. Messi then went on to describe the impression Theo had made on him, his teammates also his manager Pep Guardiola…
Messi said “I must say that at the time I thought it was a bad decision to leave Theo Walcott at home, and I think that has been proved right,” he said in the Star. “I can only speak from experience but he was one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against.”….
Then, speaking about the 31 March 2010 UCL clash between AFC & Barca, Messi said “even in the return leg, our manager Pep Guardiola was telling us he – Theo Walcott – was the player to watch out for, and the best players in the world like Xavi and Gerard Pique were telling us to watch out for him. The truth is that he really rattled him.” (I assume the ‘him’ Messi refers to is Pep)
Now to understand the enormity of Messi’s opinion, think about this: in 2011 Cristiano Ronaldo was quoted as saying “Messi has his personality and I have mine …. … .. But right now, he – Lionel Messi – is the best.” WOW! CR7 think Messi is the best (no surprise there) but Messi doesn’t think CR7 is the most dangerous!! Now that’s enormous!!
What managers think,
Messi already stated above that Pep indentified Theo Walcott as the most dangerous threat to his team in that clash, but Pep was also quoted saying “you would need a pistol to stop him” indirectly stating how dangerous an in-form Theo is. Arsene Wenger: after the 4th Feb 2012 home win against Blackburn (7-1) Wenger said Theo is “currently the best winger in the EPL”.
Add to Theo’s reverence, BMT – Big Match Temperament – that special quality all class act players must have in their arsenal (no pun intended). Theo has more than proven he has BMT, always popping up in big games with a goal or an assist, just ask Barca, Theo scored in 1st leg of the famous 2009 clash & had the assist when Bendtner put us 1-0 up in the return leg at the Camp Nou. But, don’t just take my word for it, take a minute or two & read his biography on Wikipedia, there you will find a complete list of his efforts that should more than validate he has BMT.
Now, taking into account what I’ve just brought to your attention, wouldn’t you pay £100,000 a week for a player that scared the pants of Messi & Pep Guardiola? I certainly would not think twice…
