£100k a week, for the Arsenal player that scared the pants off Messi & Guardiola?

Posted on September 06, 2012 by admin

According to media sources, Arsenal Football Club is apparently struggling to close a deal with a certain player who Lionel Messi himself once quoted as “one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against”. It is rumored that the player is holding out for a salary of about £100k a week.

Is this player worth £100k per week? I for one believe he is worth every penny and – in my opinion – is probably one of the most underrated player’s at the moment. So who’s this player? Theo Walcott. And I’m not at all surprised that so many AFC fans frown upon the salary he is reported to have asked for.

So, is Theo really worth that £100,000 p/w? Let’s see.

How does one determine a player’s footballing impact & equate that in monetary terms? To start with, we have to consult the real experts, not the player’s agent or the club’s CEO. The real experts to engage are fellow professional footballers & club managers. After all, these are the specialists who on a regular basis are tasked with dealing with devastating threats like Theo’s pace.

What players think,

In 2010 ESPNsoccernet reported that the then ‘FIFA World Player of the Year’ Lionel Messi was shocked at the exclusion of Theo Walcott from the England World Cup Squad. Messi then went on to describe the impression Theo had made on him, his teammates also his manager Pep Guardiola…
Messi said “I must say that at the time I thought it was a bad decision to leave Theo Walcott at home, and I think that has been proved right,” he said in the Star. “I can only speak from experience but he was one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against.”….
Then, speaking about the 31 March 2010 UCL clash between AFC & Barca, Messi said “even in the return leg, our manager Pep Guardiola was telling us he – Theo Walcott – was the player to watch out for, and the best players in the world like Xavi and Gerard Pique were telling us to watch out for him. The truth is that he really rattled him.” (I assume the ‘him’ Messi refers to is Pep)
Now to understand the enormity of Messi’s opinion, think about this: in 2011 Cristiano Ronaldo was quoted as saying “Messi has his personality and I have mine …. … .. But right now, he – Lionel Messi – is the best.” WOW! CR7 think Messi is the best (no surprise there) but Messi doesn’t think CR7 is the most dangerous!! Now that’s enormous!!

What managers think,

Messi already stated above that Pep indentified Theo Walcott as the most dangerous threat to his team in that clash, but Pep was also quoted saying “you would need a pistol to stop him” indirectly stating how dangerous an in-form Theo is. Arsene Wenger: after the 4th Feb 2012 home win against Blackburn (7-1) Wenger said Theo is “currently the best winger in the EPL”.

Add to Theo’s reverence, BMT – Big Match Temperament – that special quality all class act players must have in their arsenal (no pun intended). Theo has more than proven he has BMT, always popping up in big games with a goal or an assist, just ask Barca, Theo scored in 1st leg of the famous 2009 clash & had the assist when Bendtner put us 1-0 up in the return leg at the Camp Nou. But, don’t just take my word for it, take a minute or two & read his biography on Wikipedia, there you will find a complete list of his efforts that should more than validate he has BMT.

Now, taking into account what I’ve just brought to your attention, wouldn’t you pay £100,000 a week for a player that scared the pants of Messi & Pep Guardiola? I certainly would not think twice…

Is any player worth that no way. Theo is a good premiership player but in my honest opinion he is not worth 100k a week (sorry) not slating theo but lets all be honest he promises so much and what has he done to warrant that demand. To be honest his agent is a cheeky bugger he should be happy playing at arsenal and being offered 75k a week. Players are paid way to much and if canola is worth 75 and Podolski 80k then theo is no way on this earth worth 100k. I’m really sorry but let’s see more action from the winger then talk. If he ain’t happy then we have the players like we did on Sunday against Liverpool without him. 100k a week really theo. good footballer but it’s not time for him to start making demands .

John, I agree with you 100% we – AFC – shouldn’t be wasteful, but where do we draw the line?? 1 minute everyone is complaining our wage policy is really bad & the next we screaming DON’T pay this one or that one so much.

Look, the AFC board & AW already thought he was worth £70k when he signed his last contract, clearly their is an impasse & compromises have to be made. The problem is if AFC dont think he is worth it another club does & its not a mid table team, its Top Four clubs, heck AFC should be grateful he choose us when he was a teenager, if he was a greedy sod like you insinuating would he not have chosen Chelsea??

But where to now for all the fans who don’t think he is worth that much?? If AFC want to keep him they need to up their offer, if they dont think he is worth it, then let him go, but then don’t complain he is not loyal!!

Lol your a moron, Theo was never a striker, he’s barely 5’11, and Walcott was not even close to the best winger in the epl, Jaun Mata? Remember how Chelsea won champs league LOL, and remember that Theo played next to the best player of 2012 (not iniesta, it was rvp) which inflated his best seasons stats(after 3 seasons of hot/cold play). If theo Walcott is our highest paid player we might as well sell the club to an oil sheikh or Russian billionaire and just throw money at everyone the media says is good….

Obviously his strength is speed.. duh, Theo strength only comes to fruition when AFC play’s a team that also attacks us & commits players into our half, then when we counter that’s when Theo pace delivers its promise. He is devastating when allowed space.

Unfortunately, only the big teams venture forward & risk a counter, mid table teams lay back & take the counter attack route against us, only an idiot would expect a speedster to do something where there is no space!!!

Your argument is flawed. Why 100000, and not 130000 . Remember but Hanson said about Theo lacking footballing intelligence. I sometimes agree with him. He is an ex professional. Why not take his view on board. Theo is a good impact substitute player, and for that he is being offered good money at arsenal. He can out run the defenders when ball is put in behind the defenders. He can not dribble pass the players as Ox does. His close control is not as good as other attackers in the team. Therefore he should be paid no more than Carzola, Podolsky. I would like to keep Theo but since, he is in the last year of his contract, I would have sold him. We have made good start to the season and the spirit is good. This Theo situation could derail this progress. Sort it out quickly Wenger.

I’m sorry but what I’ve seen from the Ox is more football intelligence than “dribbling”.. unless you have a different description of dribbling?? Alex kinda knows when to push the ball pass players & run around them..

Bergkamp was a SUPER intelligent footballer not a dribbler but he still managed to evade defenders. Now Maradona, Roberto Baggio, Zola, Gascoigne & Denilson they were dribblers..

He is half the player he should be. As for his BMT, every game we had last season was like a cup final …. so where was his BMT then?

To be worth 100k I would expect a player to at least try to track back and help defend. I would expect 15 league goals consistently per season and much better crossing. As things are, Jenkinson is a better crosser of the ball.

The 4th official does more in most games on the wing.

Finally someone that understand Theo’s dilemma & AW thinking, too many of us fans dont realise that there is method to Wenger’s madness, he plays Theo on the wing for a reason. He is there because on the wing a player has more freedom to develop his technical abilities in the 1v1 situation & inadvertently there is also more space to run into on the wing than in the middle of the pitch.

I dont expect Theo to create wonders when we play teams like Stoke & Sunderland to name a few, they play us from their own half & hit back on the counter.. Too crowded up front for Theo to be effective.

Class is in ‘Skywalker’ listen attentively you might learn something.

Arsenal legend Thiery Henry played on the WING at his 1st two teams, Monaco & Juventus. AW moved him back to central striker where he played as a kid when he got to AFC, he was 22 when he got here. TW also played as a striker before he got to AFC.

You speak of consistency, lets look at that, TH only reached double figures in BOTH goals & assists when he reached the age of 25/26.(02/03 season)

Theo is 23 & I do agree he still has allot to learn, but the one quality that age brings is maturity & in TW case it will mean he will become more patient in his 1v1, like TH and another guy named Gareth Bale. Bale is mature enough to know he can slow down & speed up & still beat players.

& once he delivers I will remember you & if he doesn’t deliver I will just forget you hahahaha…

Thank god football fans do not run football clubs.

On one hand they clamour for Arsenal to pay overinflated transfer fees for flavor of the month players from European leagues. On the other hand, they complain about paying market rate wages to a player like Walcott. Oh, and then there are those who think we should start an 18 or 19 year old kid in front of Theo… the same kid many of them shrugged at when he was signed last summer. Make no mistake, the Ox is a great player for his age. For. His. Age. But he needs time and experience. He makes a lot of mistakes. He loses possesion a lot. The jury is still out on his dribbling skill. Fans are right to be excited about him, but lets not get carried away – or else we’ll be saying the same things about him in 3 or 4 years as is being said about Walcott now.

Walcott’s problem is that he is not as good as most of us expected him to be. But just because a player isn’t as good as we want him to be, as we think he should be, doesn’t make him bad. His stats put him at or near the top of the EPL. Even when he doesn’t appear to be involved in a game, his mere presence forces the opposition to play a more conservative line – giving our midfield extra YARDS of space. But most fans don’t see that. Most fans only look at what a player does when he has the ball, and they are all to impressed with fancy heel passes and dribbling moves. In fact, most fans who say Walcott lacks football inteligence are just mindlessly parroting something they heard a few years ago.

There is a reason why clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City (to name a few) have all expressed an interest in Walcott at one time or another. At any of those clubs he would easily be offered 100k a week… and Theo knows that.

I admire Arsenal for sticking to their wage structure, but I don’t blame Theo wanting more.

Hi docBroady. If you pay 100000 for Theo, then you would have to pay the same for , Jack Wilshire Carzola, Podolsky , Diaby, Arteta, Szczesny Vermalen, Gibbs, Sagna, Laurent . Anyway, no club had put in a bid for Theo even though he has only one year left on his contract. Why?. For RVP, only one club put in a bid. These so called other big clubs did not bother. Arsene knows that FFP is comming and Theo will not get 100000 anywhere else.

      • DocBrody says:

I disagree. First of all, you have to look at market rates for players based on position (sorry defenders). Second, players have to prove themselves worthy first. Most of the midfielders and forwards you listed need to prove they are worth by putting up the stats over the course of this season not in 2 or 3 games.

We all hope that Cazorla, Podolski, Diaby, Wilshire, etc are going to be top class, but they are going to have to prove it first (whether they are new boys or coming off injury). Walcott on the other hand has actually put up the stats, and unlike Arteta or Rosicky, Walcott is only 23 and so (fair or not), his market rate is higher. It also helps that he’s one of the fastest players in the EPL (if not the world).

If Arsenal are already winning then his speed does help to keep the fullbacks back but if Arsenal are behind against an organised team he’s as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

Seriously like 9/10 comments have been ridiculous. So many more overpaid players in Arsenal and Theo is asking for 100k. I think its fair and quiet modest to be honest. How many of Arsenal’s so called ‘deadwood’ were sold? 1, 2 at most. Why were only 1 or 2 at most sold? Because the rest of them are on ridiculous wages. Theo’s worth in contrast to the remaining unsold deadwood is easily 100k/week compared to the likes of Chamakh/Squillaci/Arshavin put together. Arshavin is a great player but his love for the game has clearly gone. Theo is still young and can turn a game on its head. He had many assists last season and from what I can tell most Arsenal fans despise him because they all expect more. He is a good talent he does his best for the team despite being in the presence of other rejects who warm the bench and reap the benefits he keeps his head up and does his job. Time to support your team!!!

Walcott, all the potential and speed but has never put it together, must be the most overrated player for Arsenal and England. Not worth any more money disappears out of a game for far too long and does not use his speed, tries to waltz around players and loses the ball far too often.

He is not worth 100k a week!

He might be in three years time, I get the feeling he thinks he is another ‘special’ player.

    Man I hate that attitude.

I wish we offered everyone a basic professional contract with huge bonuses for playing & huge performance bonuses for work rate, clean sheets, clean tackles made, goals, assists, successful pass & through ball rates etc etc etc.

Make them want to play, give them massive incentives to get and hold on to that first team place!

F*ck all the greed merchants! Although pay it where it is due!

The fact he thinks he’s worth it says it all.
Cazorla has international medals in his back pocket
and Podolski has 100 caps for one of the worlds super powers
Theo had his own box at the Emirates before he had a regular place in the first team.

The promlem is not the £100k he wants. It’s the 75k he’s already on.
He has not kicked on as expected.
Wenger usually stays clear of English players because of the inflated fees and wages.

100k/wk, huh come on guys, firstly i don’t blame Theo 4 wanting dat amount, blame mr Wenger 4 increasing d wages of an average player at d club, Theo is already on 75k, so y nt pay him d money he wants?. Wenger is trying to get rid or arshavin, wat is squillaci still doin at d club receiving 50k a wk,release squillaci n increase Theo’s wages.n remember english players r more committed to dere teams dan foreigners
